Oumnia: Creating Change One Knot at a Time

On the occasion of Oumnia Boutique’s 10th anniversary of creativity, colors and stories, Nivine Maktabi successfully realized the creation of handmade Kelims proudly made in Lebanon, more specifically in Arsal, by talented women artisans from Arsal.

“Due to my business, I tend to travel to Iran, India, Pakistan, Turkey, as well as Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan among other carpets and textile related countries.  However, I have always wished to produce carpets in Lebanon, but this was challenging, like almost everything else in Lebanon,” explains Maktabi.

Despite all odds, and after many years of trying, I am proud to have been able to go up to Arsal and met a few talented women who work on the loom. But getting to Arsal was not easy.

With the help of US Aid who believed in Maktabi’s creativity, she now works with 11 local women who use their traditional skills and talents to create an incredible range of Kelims.

The process starts with Maktabi designing the pieces in large scale and supplying the artisans with wool. After that, natural talent takes over, resulting in a fantastic collection.

These Oumnia Kelims from Arsal are proving incredibly popular and are providing a livelihood to a range of women, with more in training.
