Over the weekend, the Off-White x Rimowa collection was unveiled at a Hypefest booth at the inaugural edition of Hypebeast’s in New York City. Following the popular launch of their first collaboration, Rimowa and Virgil Abloh’s Italian streetwear label Off-White have joined forces to launch a limited-edition collection.
The booth is designed by Virgil Abloh for the brand, produced by New York-based creative agency Something Special.
Aptly titled “SEE THROUGH,” the luggage carousel- style exhibition displayed a selection of cases packed by Virgil himself. Included in the product showcase were the original transparent case with black wheels, handles, and accents; and a new version of the transparent case featuring white wheels, handles, and accents.
A brand all about creating the covetable from the mundane, Off-White has banked on irony. While the transparent cases are based on the RIMOWA Essential, due to their transparent design they have no interior lining and instead include the Flex- Divider system in black or white, a black or white case cover with the Off-White striped design, and a set of black or white cotton “Miscellaneous” bags for more efficient – and modest – packing.
The cases are fitted with RIMOWA‘s silent Multiwheel system for optimum maneuverability, TSA combination locks, a new custom Off-White luggage belt, and an exclusive transparent amenity kit containing an additional set of orange wheels.
Labeling on the locks and telescopic handle are characteristically and unmistakably Off-White in the way it adopts branding detailing into its visual language. A brazen, yet light hearted response to today’s obsessive talk of privacy culture of surveillance and anonymity, the transparent design keenly hones in on the now and the next.
